Description

The leek, scientific name Allium Ampeloprasum, is a herbaceous plant in the Amaryllidaceae family. It is thought to be a descendant of wild garlic, since there is no evidence of its spontaneous presence in nature.

We know for sure that it has been consumed and appreciated since ancient times and was known to the Egyptians and Romans; apparently Nero ate a lot of leeks in order to “purify his voice”. It has been used to make excellent soups since time immemorial.
