Description
Ananas Sativus is the fruit of a bushy plant in the Bromeliaceae family, with a distinctive shape similar to a giant pine cone. In fact it is a series of fruits fused together, leaving only the bracts visible from the outside.
The pineapple was imported from the Americas and initially grown in greenhouses in Europe. However, this was too expensive, and was soon abandoned in favour of import.
In recent times the pineapple has enjoyed enormous success, partly due to the fact that although the flavour is extremely sweet, it contains very few calories and is rich in a substance called bromelian, an enzyme which accelerates the metabolism.
