Description
The Tropea onion is the red variety of Allium Cepa, a plant in the Liliaceae family, and cultivated exclusively in the coastal area of Calabria that runs from Briatico to Capo Vaticano in the province of Cosenza. In this area, with its specific soil properties, the onion takes on a mild flavour that makes it a delicacy and distinguishes it from other varieties with a more bitter taste.
The history of Tropea onions goes back to antiquity; there is evidence of its cultivation in the area 2,000 years ago.
The young bulbs of this celebrated variety are also marketed and highly valued.
